anoint

/əˈnɔɪnt/verb

Definition

To pour or smear oil on a person's head or body as a sign of consecration, divine appointment, healing, or honor.

Modern Equivalent

consecrate with oil / ceremonially apply oil

Usage Notes

Kings, priests, and prophets were anointed for service. 'Christ' (Greek) and 'Messiah' (Hebrew) both mean 'the Anointed One.' Anointing also accompanied healing prayer.

Example Verse

Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
